A Short History
Kauri Theatre was first conceived in 2014, when a group of theatre chicks started discussing the opportunities that were available for female performers. Where were the high quality, female centric, 'meaty' roles that allowed for growth and prominence of experienced and highly talented women? Where were the theatre companies that were willing to take up the challenge of producing shows that stepped away from the traditional, male centered musicals?
Seeing an opportunity to build a new company that might meet those objectives, we began the process of building momentum. After consultation with our theatre associates, Jenny Grant, Tia Minnoch, Cheryl Moeau, Bonita Edwards, Linda Southern and Karen Irving began investigating and building the necessary processes for starting a new theatre company. With a variety of skills including theatre governance, business development, musical experience, and a huge dollop of enthusiasm, Kauri Theatre was slowly developed as a viable theatre option.
By 2016 we had secured a potential first show and director, and the formal incorporation process was implemented. Our energies went to building the administrative details, including budgeting, official registration and incorporation, and gaining interest from our theatre community for the concept of a new theatre company.
2017 saw us hold our first official AGM which led to our official incorporation and registration as a charitable entity. And momentum started to build toward our official launch and announcement of our first production: Bad Girls -The Musical - an adaption of the successful British TV show about a women's prison lead by corrupt prison personnel. With a creative team under the direction of Lindsey Rusling, Kauri Theatre Company Incorporated staged our first production in September 2018.
Along the way, there were financial concerns, steep learning curves and a lot of late nights and WT? moments. But always we knew we wanted to offer the highest quality opportunities to our performers, our crews, our supporters and our audiences.
And after 12 years of hard work and dedication Kauri Theatre has produced 7 highly successful productions and has built a reputation for exemplary production values, for supporting our community, and being the little theatre that could!
We value and appreciate all those who have had input over the years to bring this Company to our audiences. Several have moved on to other endeavours however we are thankful to those core initiators who dared to take on a challenge that others may have balked at.
